    Renew Your Vehicle Registration

All registrations may be renewed 90 days prior to expiration.

If you choose to visit a local deputy registrar license agency you will need to provide:

    • A valid Ohio driver license or State of Ohio ID card
    • If leased, a lease agreement and power of attorney documents
    • If vehicle is in an E-Check county, E-Check will be required
    • Sign a proof of Financial Responsibility Statement. It is law in Ohio that you must have insurance to drive any motor vehicle.

On initial issuance of the following vehicle classes, the expiration date will be the registrant’s birthdate, an alternate expiration date if qualified, or determined by the leasing company’s name if leased:

    • Passenger
    • Non-commercial truck or trailer
    • Motor home or house vehicle
    • Motorcycle
    • Moped
    • Motor scooter
    • Golf cart

If there are multiple residents at the same address as the applicant, the date of birth of any vehicle owner at that address may be used as the expiration date.

When a leased vehicle is one of the following, the expiration date will be the 20th day of the month assigned by the name of the lease company:

    • Passenger
    • Non-commercial truck or trailer
    • Motor home of house vehicle
    • Motorcycle
    • Motor scooter
    • Golf cart

Use the chart below to determine the month of expiration:

    First Letter Month
    A, B January
    C, D February
    E, F, G March
    H, I, J June
    K, L July
    M August
    N, O, P, Q September
    R, T October
    S November
    U, V, W, X, Y, Z December

Example: A leased Ford will expire on March 20 every year.

See the list of leasing companies that have signed up with the Ohio BMV for electronic power of attorney.

For a commercial vehicle validation sticker, the month of expiration is determined by the last two digits of the federal tax ID number or Social Security number of the titled owner. Commercial truck registrations expire on the last day of the month assigned.

    • When a leased vehicle is a commercial truck or trailer, the expiration date will be the last day of the month, determined by the last two digits of the tax ID number or Social Security number of the lessee.
    • For fleets, staggered registration is an option.
